This article intends to show how after the first world war, French intellectuals developed a particular concept of generation: they considered themselves an unsuccessful generation because they had not been able to avoid the war, and because they also felt inexperienced to build a new society. The study analyzes Jean-Richard Bloch’s position in comparison with that of other authors of this century. Subsequently the cultural context, which had an important influence both on their private lives and on their works, is reconsturcted.
