La filòloga i novel·lista Helena Valentí i Petit (Barcelona, 1940-1990) s’exilià de ben jove a Anglaterra,
on buscà en la traducció el mitjà de vida. Entre altres autors i autores, traslladà al castellà William
Blake, Marilyn French, Nicholas Guild, Najib Mahfuz, Harold Robbins, Bernice Rubens, Roger T.
Taylor i Doris Lessing, de la qual traduí El quadern daurat. De retorn a Catalunya, el 1974, decidí
compaginar la traducció amb la narrativa pròpia. Girà a la llengua catalana Al far i Una cambra
pròpia de l’anglesa Virginia Woolf i La garden party i altres contes i Un home casat i altres crueltats
de la neozelandesa Katherine Mansfield. En els anys vuitanta traslladà El factor humà de Graham
Greene i Jo, Claudi de Robert Graves, i féu una breu incursió en la narrativa per a joves. Viatges
indiscrets de Lisa St. Aubin, un recull de contes d’autores del segle XX, fou l’última traducció.
At a young age, the philologist and novelist Helena Valentí Petit (Barcelona, 1940-1990) went into
exile in England and worked as a translator there. She translated into Spanish, works by writers
such as William Blake, Marilyn French, Nicholas Guild, Najib Mahfuz, Harold Robbins, Bernice
Rubens, Roger T. Taylor and Doris Lessing: The Golden Notebook. On returning to Catalonia in
1974 she decided to combine translating with her own writing. She published Catalan translations
of Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse and A Room of One’s Own and The Garden Party and other
stories and A Married Man and other Cruelties by the New Zealand writer Katherine Mansfield.
During the 1980s she translated The Human Factor by Graham Greene and I, Claudio by Robert
Graves and wrote a few books for young people. Her final work was a translation of Indiscreet
Journeys by Lisa St. Aubin, a collection of stories by 20tn century women writers. |
