The LaboratoryofElasticityandStrengthofMaterials,intheSchoolofEngineeringofBarcelona(UPC),
has gainedawideexperienceinpallet-racktestinginrecentyears.Wehavegatheredacomprehensive
set ofexperimentalresultsfromuprightcross-sectionssubjecttocompression.Twentydifferentpallet-
rack steelprofileshavebeentested.Thisinformationisvaluableandallowsustoevaluatedifferent
methodsalternativetotestingasadesignoption.Inthispaper,twoalternativemethodsareconsidered:
the analytical,byapplyingtheEuropeanStandardEN1993-1-3:2006/AC:2009;atraditionalmethod,
which involvestheeffectivewidthdeterminationforeachpartofthesectionsubjecttocompression;
and thenumerical,byapplyingfiniteelementanalysis,includingnon-linearmaterialandgeometrical
behaviour.Theresultsofbothmethodsarecomparedtotheexperimentalones.Thisresearchreveals
that eventhoughtheEuropeanStandardEN15512:2009doesonlyaccepttheexperimentalmethodfor
perforatedsections,thesesothertwomethodscangivegoodaccuracy,andbegoodtoolsinthestageof
design andoptimization. |
