In this report, we present a mixing model for brine and CO2. The model is an
extension of the previously tested theory for H2O + NaCl mixtures which was imple-
mented in a two-phase flow simulator. The incorporation of this model into the mass
conservation equations leads to a formulation very similar to the Buckley-Leverett
theory, and applies to highly concentrated solutions. In addition, as the governing
PDEs for flow and transport are almost de-coupled, a highly e±cient numerical al-
gorithm can be applied.In the scope of geological CO2 sequestration, we are interested in studying the
behavior of dissolved carbon dioxide in the aqueous phase.Our mixing model can
be naturally extended to the ternary systems consisting of water, NaCl and CO2, or
by adding another chloride salt (H2O, CaCl2 and NaCl. The extension of
the model others a good compromise between accuracy and computational cost, while
providing a simple and flexible framework for further extensions. |
