One of the biggest challenges of the Moon exploration is the survival of the crew and the lunar assets during the lunar night. Lunar environment is a harsh, alien environment in the true sense of the word and requires technological solutions to problems that must be surmounted or mitigated if long term exploration is the ultimate goal. Short term sojourns ranging from a few days, like the Apollo missions, to a week or so can be accomplished without expending major effort into finding technological solutions. However, near-permanent presence on a human lunar outpost requires careful attention to detail and systematically worked out requirements and the means to achieve them. Environmental conditions on the lunar surface and its cycle, with long periods of darkness, make any long mission in need of specific amounts of heat and electricity to be successful. We have analyzed a system to produce electricity on the Moon’s surface. The system studied here is the Thermal Energy Storage (TES), which is able to run a heat engine during the lunar night to produce electricity. When the Sun is shining on the Moon’s surface, the system can run the engine directly using the solar power and simultaneously heat a thermal mass. This thermal mass is used as a high temperature source to run the heat engine during the night. We present analytical and numerical calculations for the determination of an appropriate thermal mass for the TES.

Català:Un dels grans reptes de la exploració lunar és la supervivència de la tripulació i de tot l’equipament necessari durant la nit. L’ambient a la lluna és hostil, estrany en el veritable sentit de la paraula i fa que es requereixin solucions tecnològiques als problemes que han de ser superats o mitigats si l'exploració a llarg termini és l'objectiu final. S’ha de pensar tant en estades curtes, com la missió Apollo, com en estades llargues, que poden ser de més d’una setmana. La presència humana de forma permanent en la Lluna requereix d’una atenció especial en els requeriments així com en els medis per aconseguir-los. Les condicions ambientals en la superfície lunar i el seu cicle, amb llargs períodes de foscor, fan que qualsevol missió necessiti una quantitat determinada de calor i electricitat per dur-se a terme. En aquest treball hem analitzat un sistema capaç de produir electricitat en la superfície lunar. El sistema estudiat és el Thermal Energy Storage (TES), que fa possible el funcionament d’una maquina tèrmica durant la nit lunar produint energia elèctrica. Quan el sol esta escalfant la superfície lunar, el sistema és capaç de fer funcionar una màquina tèrmica directament fent servir la energia solar i alhora es capaç d’escalfar una massa tèrmica. Aquesta massa tèrmica s’utilitza per emmagatzemar calor, alliberar-lo durant la nit per fer funcionar la màquina tèrmica. En aquest projecte, presentem càlculs analítics i numèrics per tal de determinar la nostra massa tèrmica i d’altres elements del TES.
