[ANGLÈS] As far as railways are concerned, the notion of capacity and the quality of both the
service and the timetable planning are interwoven. Specially, in the carrying out of
cadenced timetables coordinated on a vast territory scale. Used in order to evaluate
the system performance so as to deal with the demand requirements (quality, quantity),
the capacity depends on the infrastructure (tracks, security installations), the rolling
stock (performances, types of trains) and on the preset quality criteria (maximum
speed, acceleration, route time), which will determine the junctions or the overtakings,
in agreement with the structure and the stability of the planned timetable. By defining
and predicting the trains position in each instant on the network, the timetable
constitutes the central element of the traffic organisation, and is therefore essential to a
study dealing with train capacity increase. In particular for the single track lines
networks submitted to major timetable constraints, as in this case. (...) This is the analysis perspective from which this topic will be dealt with, in order to try to
increase the railway capacity in a precise area of the Swiss railway network by

identifying the train paths available and relying on the elaboration of both timetable and
track occupation graphics. |

[FRANCÈS] Dans les chemins de fer, et notamment dans la mise en oeuvre d'horaires cadencés
coordonnés à l'échelle d'un vaste territoire, la notion de capacité est indissociable de
celle de qualité de service et de planification horaire. Utilisée pour évaluer les
performances d’un système face à des exigences de demande (qualité, quantité), la
capacité dépend de l'infrastructure (voies, installations de sécurité..), du matériel
roulant (performances, types de trains..) et des critères de qualité prédéfinis (vitesse
maximale, accélération, temps de parcours..), qui vont déterminer les points de
croisements ou de dépassements, en accord avec la structure et la stabilité d’horaire
envisagée. En définissant et prévoyant la position des trains à chaque instant sur le
réseau, l'horaire constitue l’élément central de l’organisation des circulations, et résulte
indispensable pour une étude d'augmentation de capacité ferroviaire, notamment pour
des réseaux de lignes à voies uniques soumises à des fortes contraintes d'horaires,
comme il en est l'objet et le cas de ce sujet. (...) C'est dans cette ligne d'analyse que se développe ce sujet, afin de chercher à
augmenter la capacité ferroviaire pour une zone précise du réseau ferré suisse, tout en
identifiant les sillons disponibles à partir de l'élaboration de graphiques horaires et de
graphiques d'occupation de voies. |
