This report outlines the design of a high pressure combustion chamber that will be used to examine the combustion of renewable syngas fuel. The combustion chamber was designed as a pressurized vessel, which is regulated by the ASME code. The design of the pressurized vessel has been more difficult than expected. Using FEA analysis, it has been determined that the holes on the chamber (windows) contributed to a huge stress concentration factor. In order to solve this problem the windows have been reinforced using flanges and inner fillets. Another challenge was to determine the maximum temperature achieved in the wall because the yield strength depends on the temperature, and will affect the final design. The design of the chamber also included the design of the optical windows and the exhaust system. Furthermore, it is important to note that the project consisted solely of the design of the chamber, as the construction of the chamber was beyond the scope of this work. |
