Abstract:

This work shows a technique to estimate the vegetation opacity and infer the vegetation water content using a single GPS receiver located under the vegetation layer being analyzed. It is based on the measurement of the received signal power when the GPS satellite is at the zenith, and when the GPS satellite is with an elevation of 30 degrees. Assuming a horizontally stratified vegetation layer, the attenuation on the GPS signal due to vegetation doubles at 30° elevation angle compared to the zenith. This attenuation is directly related to the vegetation opacity. Then, the vegetation opacity is related to the vegetation water content by a linear parameter. Initial results relating the measured GPS signal power to canopy parameters obtained from hemispheric photos are shown. |
