pertinentes. |

An oil spill is a release of this hydrocarbon that is produced due to an accident
or human bad praxis, contaminating the marine environment. Any spillage of oil
has implications both for the environment and people, to short and long term.
The need of assessment to define strategies for the reaction to such a
catastrophe is especially important when the oil is released and the slick features
and the extension of its consequences are unknown. A useful tool in order to
generate an effective response is the modelling of the spillage’s future trajectory.
This modelling allows to know with anticipation the future track of the slick.
Although there are a large number of programs with models that try to simulate
the trajectory of a spill, many of these are out of reach of the vast majority of
potential users for being owned by private companies and in other cases their
development is limited to only the surface transport of the slick (2D models). For
this reason, the main objective of this minor thesis is the creation of a simulation
program with a three-dimensional model. This objective has been done through
the adaptation of an existing two dimensions’ program, SIMOIL, to a code that
enables the hydrocarbon trajectory simulation in a three-dimensional way. This
main objective can be subdivided in minor goals such as the introduction of new
variables and new dimensions in the old code that allow the three-dimensional
development throughout all the program, the adaptation of the different
subroutines for reading three dimensional data files that make it possible to define
both the characteristics of the oil slick and the boundaries of the simulation
(bathymetry, speed fields, etc.), the modification of the calculation subroutines
designed for the 2D to 3D (such as the interpolation between data or the
calculation of the transport of the spillage) and, finally, the adaptation of the
results writing in files that later, once created a suitable tool for a new threedimensional
display, permit its graphical representation.
In the simulations presented for the validation of the results obtained using the
new program there have been used files with data belonging to the Catalan South
Coast (from the port of Tarragona to Delta del Ebro). With them and the
description of a fictitious spill it has been verified the three-dimensional function
of the program once the respective previous modifications were done. |
