In the extensive high demanding field of optical communications there is constant research in flexible, efficient and stable light sources that are key components to accomplish the large demand of data traffic. In this work, two different approaches to Frequency Comb Generators are proposed as a solution. First, a Frequency Comb based on electro-optical phase and intensity modulation is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally, featuring 7 lines equally spaced at the radio signal frequency driving the modulators. The possibility to generate lines with spacing larger than the driving frequency is also demonstrated. In addition, the use of this technique in an optical communication system is discussed and compared to current technologies by means of a proposed application. Second, Mode-Locked laser approach to a Frequency Comb is presented and a 7 lines comb is realized by filtering the broad output spectrum of the laser. The Mode-Locked laser is employed as well as light source in a 2.5GHz pulse repetition rate return-to-zero modulation communication system. |
