Concrete is the most used material to build structures in our country, due to its low market
price and the ease to get its primary components. That encouraged, in the last years, the
research regarding the use of other typologies of concrete that are less extended than the
conventional reinforced concrete. One of those new typologies is the FRC, which advantage is
the optimization of the design of concrete structures. That is due to the fact that the fibres
provide the material with residual resistance after cracking, leading to an improvement on its
ductility. Moreover, depending on the amount of fibres and their types, the built element
could be used for structural purposes.
Therefore, the addition of fibres to the matrix of the conventional concrete improves the
properties of the material. If that matrix is from an UHPC, characterized by having a
mechanical resistance to compression higher than 120 MPa, an UHPFRC will be obtained.
HUARF is the main subject of the present study. Because of the addition of the fibres, the
HUARF also changes from a mainly fragile to a ductile behaviour. However, the interphase
fibre-matrix keeps having a low mechanical resistance, which favours the propagation of
fissures in the material.
The current report aims to improve the features of the interphase by using the silane
functionalization. This technique consists of increasing the specific surface of the fibres by
substances deposition. That increases the rugosity of the fibres while improving the adherence
between the fibre and the matrix. If the technique is executed properly and it results effective,
the cracking would be controlled and the mechanical properties of the UHPFRC would be
improved in a long term.
The designed treatment is divided in four different stages. In the first stage, the steel fibre is
soaked in acetone to keep the surface free from oils and organic residues stick on it during the
manufacture process. The second stage consists in activating the surface of the fibres by
soaking them in NaOH. Doing that, the concentration of hydroxyl groups in the metallic surface
will increase, making easier the subsequent recoating with silane. In the third stage the
functionalization is carried out, introducing the fibres in a silane dissolution to cover them.
Finally, the fibres are soaked in a solution of Ca(OH)2 to make the layer of silane react and
provide the affinity between the fibre and the matrix.
In order to evaluate the treatment, different UHPFRC are built using the treated metallic fibres
as a support. Firstly, a preliminary experiment is developed to define the different variables of
the treatment, such as the optimal concentration of silane. After that, a specific experiment is
done in order to exhaustively study the features of the HUARF produced.
It is important to mention that the methodology is still in a development phase. However, the
results that have been obtained until now suggest that the implementation of this technique
at a large scale could be feasible. |
