A set of inscribed pedestals concerning to Greek heroes and to chief Roman historical individuals linked with Tusculum (Latium, Italy) could have shaped an exceptional local summi viri gallery. Their names are related with events of the archaic period and with the founding legend of the city. It can be assumed its primary position in a public context by comparison with testimonies from other towns. The program is dated in the last century B.C., therefore it must have been created before the Forum of Augustus; for that, it is possible to presume the existence of similar proposals in Latium vetus. In that way, Tusculum would be, so far, the only case that preserves so clear epigraphic evidence. |
