Through human history, we can see how scientific and technological developments have
contributed to the progress of construction. These contributions help construction systems to
create the perfect refuge for the human being. However, this development has negative
effects on the environment.
Studying the environmental impact of construction, allows us to be conscientious in making
decisions about the systems and materials to select while planning. This study aims to
analyze, in a comparative way, the environmental impact of the construction of different
types of roof systems used in Spain, through the methodology of life cycle analysis (LCA).
According to the classification of roofs proposed by the Technical Code (CTE-DB-HS1),
seven different types of roof, both inclined and flat, were taken as study case.
The first part of this document collects information about the roof systems, their evolution
over time, classification, materials and regulations. Then the objects of study are selected,
using the same characteristics, but with different types of materials. Within the inclined roofs
were selected made of tile, slate, asphalt and metal. Within the flat roofs, they are studied
according to their use. In this classification the walk-on roof and no walk-on roof (made of
gravel) and green roof are selected.
According to the Spanish Technical Code (CTE), it is necessary to verify the behavior of the
roof systems against the temperature, humidity, noise, loads that can affect the structure,
and effects against fire. According to the constructive solutions of roofs systems proposed by
the CTE, the calculation corresponding to each of the parameters mentioned above is
carried out in order to verify if they comply with the regulations. In addition, it is observed
how the different types of roofs selected behave. This helped to make the decision of making
the comparison between the roofs of the same classification.
Finally, the different types of roofs are modeled in the Athena software, whose methodology
is the life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Results are obtained where you can visualize those type
of roofs that produce less negative environmental impact, according to the different
environmental indicators. On the other hand, the stages of the LCA are highlighted, where
the construction of the roofs affect the environment in greater proportion.
In this study, it is important to highlight the energy consumption of the different types of roofs
selected. On the other hand, it is recommended within the methodology of any type of study
that involves the LCA of the construction, consideration of the context of the project, as well
as taking into account the environmental effects of the chosen materials. |
