The Argentinean pampa, originally inhabited by aborigine tribes, was an unattended
landscape, considered "barbaric and uncultured" until mid-nineteenth century. Technical
progress (cartography, railroad, telegraph, windmill, among others) allowed colonization and helped the incorporation of this territory into the productive system. In this sense, landscape begins to be appreciated and, in a few years, it is transformed from a reviled landscape and "barbarism" generator (in opposition to the "civilization" represented by urban life), into the productive landscape of the Argentina that was being built. This study aims, through the analysis of some representative maps of the nineteenth century, to relate mapping of the territory of the pampas to the idea of landscape that was constructed about it. Thanks to the cartographic representation, a vision of the pampa was generated: a homogeneous territory, without particular features, as a promising land that can and should be occupied. However, once the colonization was achieved, it changed into the source of agricultural production of the country, becoming the symbol of Argentine prosperity: the "national landscape." |
