[ANGLÈS] This paper is a study and improvement of the “Formula Renault Mygale ’96” front and rear wings from the aerodynamic point of view. In addition, the importance of the aerodynamic in a race has been explained from the beginning.
On the one hand, a two-dimensional study of the current wings of the car with the XFLR5 program will be carried out. Once the first results of the lift (CL) and drag (CD) coefficients have been obtained, we will produce a 3D model of the wings, at a reduced scale, simulating in a wind tunnel the same current conditions of the car. Once we have obtained the aerodynamic loads from the data collection in the wind tunnel, we also obtain the aerodynamic coefficients and compare them with those calculated in the two-dimensional study.
On the other hand, we set up the parameters to perform the digital simulation with the Siemens NX (CFD) software by designing the prototypes of the current wings in CAD and comparing both simulations, the experimental one and the numerical one. Then, we achieve the results of the simulations applying the modifications studied with the same software. These improvement modifications will be a new design and configuration of the wings; optimizing the angle of attack, and the implementation of an active spoiler system, similar to the “DRS” of Formula 1 which regulates the angle of attack of the upper profile of the rear wing according to the conditions of the single-seater and the race track type. In addition, we will verify that the supports of subjection of the wings are reliable once the relevant modifications have been made.
Finally, to sum up this paper, what is going to do is a comparison between the experimental results obtained with the wind tunnel, the two-dimensional (XFLR5) results achieved by calculation, and the results derived from three-dimensional numerical simulation (Siemens NX). In order to obtain an empirical conclusion, we will determine how the improvements of the new wings have risen compared to the current ones. |
