La crítica literària ha insistit en la influència que Ambrose Bierce ha exercit en escriptors posteriors tan reconeguts com Crane, Hemingway o Borges. Tanmateix, l'acollida a Espanya d'aquest autor del segle XIX va ser relativament tardana i no va ser fins a la dècada dels noranta que va produir-se una consideració significativa d'aquesta figura oblidada de les lletres nord-americanes. Les seves traduccions al català i al castellà han romàs, però, un camp d'estudi pràcticament inexplorat d'aleshores ençà. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és, doncs, oferir una aproximació crítica a algunes de les traduccions realitzades en aquestes dues llengües. L'article se centra en l'anàlisi de tres traduccions del relat «An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge», les de José Bianco, José Luis Moreno-Ruiz i Joan Sellent. Aquesta anàlisi parteix d'un estudi previ dels trets més característics de l'estil biercià i de les tècniques narratives que han fet d'aquest relat el més aclamat de l'autor. En primer lloc, l'anàlisi aborda els aspectes semàntics que causen més dificultats a l'hora de ser traduïts, com la terminologia militar o el sarcasme. I a continuació, examina la traducció dels aspectes formals, com ara la puntuació, la sintaxi o les figures retòriques. En aquest procés, hem comparat les tres traduccions amb el text d'origen i hem analitzat les solucions adoptades pels traductors, considerant fins a quin punt aquestes traduccions reflecteixen els components característics tant de la prosa bierciana com del relat estudiat. Els resultats mostren tres aproximacions molt diferents a l'estil de l'autor, alhora que han permès establir una sèrie de relacions entre la versió de José Bianco i les de Herrero i Aroca (1963) i Alonso de Ilera (1998).

Critics have insisted on Ambrose Bierce's influence upon later writers as renowned as Crane, Hemingway, or Borges. Yet, the reception of this 19th century author in Spain was relatively late and it was not until the nineties that a significant appreciation of Bierce took place. His translations into Spanish and Catalan have remained, however, a practically unexplored field. The aim of the present work is thus to offer a critical approach to some of the translations made in these two languages. This article focuses on the analysis of three translations of his short story «An Occcurrence at Owl Creek Bridge», those by José Bianco, José luis Moreno-Ruiz and Joan Sellent. The analysis is based on a previous study of the most defining features of the author's style and the narrative techniques which make «An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge» Bierce'smost acclaimed tale. It focuses first on the semantic aspects which cause more difficulties in translation, such as military terms or sarcasm. Subsequently, it centres into the translation of the formal aspects which are to be maintained on account of their effect on the reader's perception of the story, such as punctuation, syntax or rhetorical devices. In this process, we compare the three translations with the source text and discuss the translators' solutions, considering to what extent these translations reflect the characteristic components of both the author's prose and the tale taken into account. The results show three very different approaches to Ambrose Bierce's style, while they allow us to est ablish a link between José Bianco's version of «An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge» and those by Herrero and Areca (1963), and Alonso de Ilera (1998).
