Given the massive quantity of texts that require translation, the importance of Computer-
Assisted Translation tools (CAT tools) in today’s market is unquestionable. Not only do
these tools help translators to do their job faster, but also ensure coherence within the text,
which allows translators to increase their income and provide higher quality translations.
The purpose of this paper is to analyse whether different universities from around the
world which offer Translation studies teach their students how to use these tools.
Furthermore, this paper seeks to discover the point of view of the students at these
universities and if they use CAT tools when translating. To do so, I have divided this
research into two parts. Firstly, I have studied the curricula of six universities worldwide
and listed the number of subjects at each university allotted to teaching computer assisted
translation, as well as the contents that students learn in these courses. Secondly, in order
to know the students’ point of view, I have conducted a survey at the universities that
have been analysed. The results of this study show that all the universities studied offer
at least one subject where students learn how to use CAT tools, and although the programs
that different universities teach may vary, the contents learned by students are very
similar. Nevertheless, the results reveal that in most cases the number of students that use
these tools when translating is very low. |
