The comic medium has experienced an enormous increase in popularity in recent years,
becoming more noticeable than ever. For this reason, this paper aims to build upon that
and develop the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, which has strangely never reached the
Spanish market.
The paper provides a comprehensive understanding of the specifics of comic translation
—from extratextual aspects such as formatting and image subordination, to linguistic
problematics, namely orality and terminology— as well as a basic background of the
character and his presence in his original media and particularly in comic books. The
core of the project is a professionally-intended translation of three issues of Sonic the
Hedgehog by Archie Comics (one from 1993 and two from 2015), taking into account
the previously translated and localized material, and accompanied by an in-depth
analysis of the most relevant aspects and problems encountered in the translation
process. Finally, this translation is formulated into conclusions which confirm the
difficulties pointed out by numerous experts in the field of comic translation. |
