Abstract:

The decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union is a current political issue and a subject of social interest. Brexit was determined through a popular referendum on the 23th June 2016. Since then the UK Government has been undertaking procedures and negotiations to withdraw from the single market. The United Kindgom’s exit from and new partnership with the European Union is a white paper published on the 17th February 2017 on behalf of the government that outlines the above mentioned. It is a key document which sets out the steps to follow and the negotiations to hold in order to achieve a good deal for the entire country paying strict attention to national interests, while at the same time accommodating European interests and creating a new partnership with the EU. There are two aims for translating this document into Catalan. First, filling up the gap of the use of Catalan in matters of international relations. Secondly, given the fact that this subject concerns the whole of the EU, this thesis aims to translate the publication into a language spoken amongst the Catalan speaking minority, which forms a significant part of the European community. Translating governmental publications implies carrying out an extensive study of both linguistic and contextual factors resulting from cultural differences and in order to eventually produce an adequate translation of the source document. For this reason, this paper also includes a brief analysis of current issues framing the Brexit debate and two glossaries that reflect the research and investigation put into practice for the translation of key words. Finally, I come to the conclusion that the Catalan language lacks the sufficient resources in this area of specialised translation –legal and economic–, and it is in the interest of the Catalan community to work on developing resources in order to intensify the use and the divulgation of our language in this sector. |
