Como demostró Edward Said en Orientalismo la cultura fue una valiosa aliada, si no la que más, en este complejo sistema imperial de dominación colonial. El presente texto trata de establecer conexiones entre la fotografía brasileña y la genealogía de A Negra (1923) de Tarsila do Amaral. A partir del convencimiento de que las imágenes son constructoras de realidades, pretendemos apuntar algunas relaciones y problemas que enlazan la fotografía de finales del siglo xix y la pintura modernista de principios del siglo xx
