Las presas de Mequinenza, Riba-roja y Flix interrumpen la continuidad del transporte de sedimentos en el
tramo bajo del río Ebro. Este estudio presenta el balance de sedimentos de este tramo fluvial a partir de mediciones
regulares y durante crecidas de sedimento en suspensión y carga de fondo, aguas arriba y abajo de los embalses durante
el período 2002-2004. La carga sólida total aguas arriba de la presa de Mequinenza es de 3,28x106 t, el 99% transportadas
en suspensión. Aguas abajo de la presa de Flix la carga sólida total es de 0,91x106 t, casi el 60% en suspensión
y el resto como carga de fondo. La diferencia en el patrón de transporte se explica tanto por la falta de suministro
de sedimento fino aguas abajo de los embalses como por la magnitud de los caudales liberados desde las presas,
que todavía conservan una notable competencia para la movilización y el transporte del material del lecho del río. Las
tasas de carga de fondo indican una alta actividad sedimentaria en el cauce del Ebro, casi cuatro décadas después del
cierre de las presas. |

Sediment transport continuity in the lower Ebro River is disrupted by the Mequinenza, Riba-roja and Flix
Dams. This work presents the sediment budget of that river reach estimated from field measurements of suspended
sediment and bedload taken regularly and during floods. Samples were collected upstream and downstream from the
dams during the period 2002-2004. Total sediment load upstream from the dams is 3.28x106 t, of which 99% are transported
in suspension. Downstream, the sediment load is 0.91x106 t, around 60% transported in suspension and the rest
as bedload. Differences in the sediment-type load can be attributed both to the lack of fine sediment supply from upstream
and to the magnitude of the flows released from the dams, which are competent enough to entrain and transport
considerable amounts of the river’s bed-material. Bedload transport demonstrates that the riverbed of the lower Ebro
is still highly active four decades after dams’ closure. |
