Abstract:

Cancer is currently one of the first diseases that threaten the life of many
people at a worldwide level. When cancer is diagnosed it has a huge impact on both the lives
of the patient and of his or her relatives, especially in those families with a teenager
son/daughter, as they are more vulnerable in this context.
Objective: To get to know if having a parent with cancer causes an impact on their lives and
how they experience their parent’s disease within the family circle and outside of it. To get to
know their needs, function, communication, strategies and support programs that help them
deal with cancer.
Method: This study carries out a revision of international literature through the use of
scientific data bases such as PubMed, CINAHL, “Biblioteca Digital UIC” and SCOPUS. For
the search strategy key words were established and search filters and criteria of inclusion and
exclusion were both applied. 40 scientific articles were found and they were selected for a
systematic analysis.
Discussion and results: Five main themes were identified and related with parents with
cancer: the impact on the teenager, the impact on the family system, information and
communication, strategies to cope for teenagers and programs of family support.
In the case of the impact on teenagers we can find a variety of problems such as emotional
and behavioral problems. The best predictor that determines how the teenager will cope with
these problems is to observe and determine whether the dysfunction still persists at the end of
the first year. Both communication and familiar cohesion are essential for the teenager to be
able to cope with the disease of his father or mother. Likewise, the strategies that focused on
the emotions and the problems are the ones used by the teenagers depending on the impact of
the cancer, the cohesion and the family bonds. The support programs that stand out the most
are those that are centered on the needs of the teenager and their relatives.
Conclusions: The identification an attention given to how teenagers cope and their needs
allows the healthcare professionals to establish individual interventions and a specific support
program for each teenager and their families.
