2.5E-09 m/s. |

This dissertation presents a research conducted for obtaining the hydraulic
parameters of soils with different permeabilities at their unsaturated state
using a suction infiltrometer.
The methodology is based on analysis of infiltration tests using a infiltrometer
with a minidisc on a fixated suction. Hydraulic parameters were obtained
from the analysis of the infiltration curves (Zhang method), but also from
tests of direct measurement of permeability (constant and variable head
tests) and empirical correlations from authors like Hazen, Terzhagi, van
Genuchten and others, based on parameters obtained from basic
characterization of the soil. A simulation of the infiltration test is also carried
out on the finite element’s modeling code Code_Bright, in order to analyze
the effects of initial suction in the process of water infiltration into the soil.
An experimental laboratory procedure was developed for the obtention of the
hydraulic parameters consisting on the preparation of soil samples at
different degrees of saturation in cylindrical methacrylate vessels.
The observations of the volume of water infiltrated into the sample over time
with a constant head pressure equivalent to 6 cm of suction imposed in the
tank of the equipment, conform the experimental data analyzed in this
research.
The analysis was performed for a fine and semi-rounded sand with some silt
content, and the clay of the Campus Nord. The values of the retention curve
for the sand were obtained by measuring the soil suction by means of a
tensiometer. The clay parameters were taken from the Ph.D. investigations of
Barrera (2002).
The saturated permeability (ks), obtained using the Zhang method, for both
materials, show an inverse relationship, nonlinear, to the degree of saturation
of the sample before starting infiltration tests.
A hydraulic conductivity (ks) of 2.1E-04 m/s was obtained for the sand with
the Zhang-vG method, at a degree of initial saturation of 10% and approximately 50 kPa of suction. This value was the closest to the 1.6E-04
m/s obtained from the constant head permeability test.
For the Campus Nord clay, the relationship of Schlichter with a saturated
permeability coefficient of 3.3E-09 m/s is the closest to the result obtained by
Barrera (2002), also on a constant head permeability test, of 2.5E-09 m/s. |
