In this work, a totally chlorine free (TCF) sequence including a laccase-mediator system was developed in a softwood sulfite pulp. Then, purification was carried out employing strong alkaline extractions and hydrolytic enzymes (endoglucanases). The combination of both procedures led to reduce the amount of hemicelluloses and increase the solubility behaviour of cellulose, desired aspects for its final application. Finally, laccase-TEMPO system was used to evaluate the improvement of strength properties through oxidative modification of cellulose
