Smoulderingcombustioninburningpileswasexperimentallyinvestigatedbystudyingtemperature
changes insixpilesof2mofdiameterofcuttingdebrisofhazel(Corylusavellana) forthreedaysafter
extinction.ThepilesweremonitoredusinganIRcameraandK-typethermocouples.Theexperiment
wasdesignedinordertostudyhowthemaximumtemperatureofthecharcoalmightbeinfluencedby
the individualandinteractioneffectsofboththequalityofextinctionandtheelapsedtimeuntilthe
start ofextinctionofthepiles.Thepilesthatwereproperlyextinguished(i.e.usingahigh-pressure,
homogeneouslydistributedwaterflowof50l/minfor4min)hadauniformtemperatureprofileanddid
not havesignificanthotspots.Thetemperaturereachedequilibriumwiththeenvironmentinlessthan
10hafterextinction.Incontrast,asmoulderingfrontmovedthroughoutthepoorlyextinguishedpiles,
which hadawidetemperaturedistributionandhotspotsofupto700 1C. Asimulationofwindy
conditionsafterthreedaysofexperimentsonapoorlyextinguishedpileshowedthatthereactivationof
charcoal combustionwaspossible.Itgaveahigh-riskscenariotocauseawildfire,withhotsmouldering
embersbeingtransportedbywindflow.Theresultsareofinteresttoimprovepileburningprotocolsso
that thenumberofwildfirescausedbysuchpracticesmaybereduced. |
