Due to its properties, the EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) slag, by-product of the Steel
production process, is suitable to be used as a substitute of natural aggregates coming
from quarries. Its use therefore does not just reduce the environmental impact but
contributes to promote circular economy and to reduce landfill disposal. However,
due to the characteristics of the steel production process, the EAF slag can contain
expansive compounds or leachable heavy metals elements that reduce its range of
uses on the civil engineering applications or other fields. The purpose of this
document is to establish if an aging process based on the regular hydration of the slag
or its carbonation can improve the characteristics of the slag, ensuring then a wide
range of potential applications for it.
The results have shown that both the aging and the carbonation processes lead to an
improvement of the slag behaviour, reducing the expansion in comparison to the
same slag stockpiled and exposed to weather conditions during the same time period.
It has been noticed that during the first stage of the aging process the expansion
potential of the slag increases for unknown reasons, it has not being possible to
establish the cause of this behaviour with the available data and the characterisation
tests done, a deeper analysis should be done. Last, leaching behaviour has been
reported to change due to the weathering and carbonation processes, the latter has
shown a better ability to reduce the leachable compounds. |
