This report describes an investigation by a student team in the framework of European Project Semester, into the use of diamond carbon coatings for biomedical engineering. Allotropic forms of carbon applications are being investigated as very interesting materials as to produce advanced micro-electronic devices, coatings for cutting tools and implants. Due to the highest biocompatibility of carbon resulting from the presence of this element in the human body, it appears to be a potential biomaterial. There is a need to improve biomaterials by developing technologies to improve different kinds of carbon coatings using diamond-like carbon which is deposited for instance on the surface of implants and surfaces of bioelectrical devices, in order to increase optimal properties like the biocompatibility, haemocompatibility and to achieve proper mechanical characteristics according to particular applications. This report contains the work and results of an investigation about how to improve and optimize biosensors for drug detection using carbon-diamond coatings. The necessary technological lab equipment was used in order to improve the performance of the manufacturing processes of the coatings and their properties. |
