On December 30 of the year 2000, a strong and sudden episode of wind hit the Eastern Pyrenees, causing a severe blizzard. The wind lifted the snow that covered the ground, reducing visibility and causing extreme conditions that caused fatalities. The aim of this proposal is to study the weather conditions of this extreme event. Observations of temperature, precipitation and wind velocity collected by the weather stations of the Servei Meterològic de Catalunya closest to the region where the blizzard occurs are analyzed. In addition, a synoptic analysis has been made to examine the possible causes of the blizzard generated using two models: United Kingdom Meteorological Office Model and Climate Forecast System Reanalysis. Subsequently mountain waves are presented and defined, a specific type of turbulence, given its importance in aviation. Different parameters are also described (the frequency of Brünt Väisälä, the Froude number or the Scorer parameter) that helps to diagnose its appearance. These parameters are obtained in the area under study by using a numerical simulation with the Weather Research and Forecasting mesoscale model. Sections of wind fields and potential temperature for the period of the blizzard are also shown and analyzed. The simulation shows the influence of orographic characteristics on the atmospheric conditions and the stability of the atmosphere and the generation of mountain waves are quantified. |
