An study on African Associations in Cataluña: actions and future trends

Abstract

El artículo analiza la acción socioeducativa que se desarrolla en las asociaciones de inmigrantes de origen africano de la comunidad autónoma de Cataluña, destacando como la más implementada la mediación intercultural. El análisis se basa en una encuesta realizada a 206 asociaciones de inmigrantes y en 56 entrevistas a los presidentes de las asociaciones de inmigrantes africanos, y a los representantes de las entidades privadas y a los organismos de la administración catalana que realizan el papel de interlocutores. Desde nuestro punto de vista, las asociaciones de inmigrantes se convierten en espacios privilegiados donde se fomenta la integración social, y donde se consensúan y se unifican las negociaciones para llevar a cabo dicha integración. En su nueva sociedad, los inmigrantes experimentan una metamorfosis interior por medio de la cual continúan conservando sus raíces pero cada vez son más parte viva y consciente de un nuevo mundo.

The article analyzes the socio-educational action that takes place in the African Immigrants associations in Cataluña, highlighting the intercultural mediation as the most implemented. The analysis is based on a survey done to 206 associations and 56 interviews to the presidents of African immigrants associations, and representatives of private entities and catalan public administration, agencies which are interlocutors of African associations. From our point of view, immigrant associations become priviliged spaces where social integration is promoted and where negotiations are agreed and unified to implement the mentioned integration. In their new society, immigrants go through an internal metamorphosis by means of they remain preserving their roots but progressively become more alive and conscious of their new world.
