Contrasting metabolic responses to increasing temperature in four mediterranean echinoderms

Martín-Huete, M.; Quesada, Javier; Pérez-Portela, R. (Publication date: 2026-01-29)

Marine ectotherms, organisms whose body temperature depends on their environment, often rely on physiological plasticity to withstand rapid temperature increases when behavioural adjustments are insufficient. Despite ...

Tracing time's footprints: exploring feeding ecology and historical changes of mediterranean common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) over two centuries

Pasino, Martina; Giménez, Joan; Tinti, Fausto (Publication date: 2025-08-13)

The Mediterranean common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) presents an enigmatic natural history during the past centuries. Widely prevalent in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it faced a significant decline across most of ...

Environmental drivers of House Sparrow Passer domesticus presence and abundance in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona: a multi-variant approach

Guallar, Santi; Cai, Xiaouyu; Quesada, Javier (Publication date: 2025)

Despite being one of the most abundant animal species in the world, House Sparrow Passer domesticus numbers have declined significantly worldwide in recent decades, above all in urban areas. We studied the influence of ...

Obtaining three-dimensional models of limb long bones from small mammals: a photogrammetric approach

Durão, Ana Filipa; Muñoz-Muñoz, Francesc; Martínez-Vargas, Jessica; Ventura, Jacint (Publication date: 2018-10-31)

The use of two-dimensional (2D) pictures to analyse form variation of three-dimensional (3D) objectsentails measurement error, loss of important information and a possible misinterpretation of real shapechanges. Despite ...

Recognizing interspecific dominance signals? Blue tits adjust nest defence based on great tit's black bib size

Quesada, Javier; Guallar, Santi; Navalpotro, Helena; Carrillo-Ortiz, José; Senar, Juan Carlos (Publication date: 2024-03-18)

Animals use colours, morphological structures and behaviour to advertise their dominance status and ability to obtain resources (Resource Holding Potential, RHP) in agonistic contexts with conspecifics. Dominance ...

From partial to complete: wing- and tail-feather moult sequence and intensity depend on species, life-cycle stage, and moult completeness in passerines

Guallar, Santi (Publication date: 2024-02-27)

Passerines moult during various life-cycle stages. Some of these moults involve the retention of a variable quantity of wing and tail feathers. This prompts the question whether these partial moults are just arrested ...

Concentrations and distribution of 210Pb in bird feathers and its potential for tracing age and flight times

Fraixedas, Sara; Riera, Alba; Barriocanal, Carles; Alorda-Montiel, Irene; Quesada, Javier; Rodellas, Valentí; Garcia-Orellana, Jordi (Publication date: 2024-02-16)

Bird feathers have been widely used as environmental indicators, providing key information on environmental pollution. However, there is little available information on the adsorption of natural radioactivity in bird ...

Moult intensity constraints along the complete moult sequence of the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)

Guallar, Santi; Quesada, Javier (Publication date: 2023-07-11)

Sequence and intensity are two essential components of bird moult. While the moult sequences of remex tracts are highly homogenous across passerines, other tracts apparently show a high variability. Moreover, order of moult ...

House Sparrow (Passer domesticus) escape behavior is triggered faster in smaller settlements

García-Arroyo, Michelle; MacGregor-Fors, Ian; Quesada, Javier; Borràs, Antoni; Colomé-Menoyo, Laia; Senar, Juan Carlos (Publication date: 2023-02-13)

A recurrent behavioral trait model to study adaptation to urban environments is the flight initiation distance (FID), measured as the distance at which animals flee from an approaching threat. It has previously been shown ...

Hunter sparrows: a predation record of a House Sparrow on Kentish Plover nestlings

Quesada, Javier; Pàmies, Enric; Oliver, Carles; MacGregor-Fors, Ian (Publication date: 2022-12)

Many bird species with behavioural plasticity innovate when searching for alternative trophic resources, mainly during periods of energetic constraints, when colonizing new habitats, or during the breeding season when the ...

Keys to the city: an integrative conceptual framework on avian urban filtering

MacGregor-Fors, Ian; García-Arroyo, Michelle; Quesada, Javier (Publication date: 2022-10-17)

Urbanization represents a multi-dimensional ecological ‘filter’ for birds determined by a myriad of variables that can change over time. Birds colonising an urban system or staying in a habitat that has been recently ...

Marginal-covert moult in the House Sparrow Passer domesticus

Guallar, Santi; Carillo-Ortiz, José; Quesada, Javier (Publication date: 2022-08-24)

Marginal coverts are often neglected in passerine moult studies due to their small size and large number. Here, we document eight moult components of this group of wing coverts in a House Sparrow population from Barcelona ...

Bold or shy? Examining the risk-taking behavior and neophobia of invasive and non-invasive house sparrows

Quesada, Javier; Chávez-Zichinelli, Carlos A.; García-Arroyo, Michelle; Yeh, Pamela J.; Guevara, R.; Izquierdo-Palma, J.; MacGregor-Fors, Ian (Publication date: 2022-03-01)

Dado que el comportamiento proporciona un marco útil para comprender la especialización, la personalidad animal puede ayudar a explicar la capacidad invasiva de las aves. La invasión implica la dispersión por áreas ...
