Nel saggio l'autrice indaga il valore dell'immagine e il rapporto della scrittura petrarchesca con le arti figurative. I testi fondamentali sono i due sonetti sul ritratto di Laura eseguito da Simone Martini (RVF 77 e 78) e il sonetto «della Veronica» (RVF 16). L'analisi dei testi mostra di più come il punto focale della meditazione petrarchesca sia la trasformazione dell'idolo in icona mediante un processo di «visualizzazione spirituale» dell'immagine concreta che ha il suo esempio significante proprio nella Veronica, la «vera immagine» del Volto Santo.

In this essay, the author enquires into the value of the image and the relationship between Petrarchan writing and the figurative arts. The basic texts are the two sonnets by Simone Martini (RVF 77 and 78) on the portrait of Laura and the sonnet «della Veronica» (RVF 16). The analysis of the texts highlights the manner in which, at the centre of Petrarchan meditation, there is a transformation from idol to icon through a process of the «spiritual visualisation» of the specific image, whose most significant example is Veronica, «true image» of the Holy Visage.
