Burzio's Generalization, Binding Theory and I-Subjects

Abstract

L'objectiu d'aquest article és explorar una proposta alternativa a la teoria estàndard GB sobre la natura de CONC i el subjecte de la frase. S'hi dóna compte del conjunt clàssic de propietats de les llengües de subjecte nul (subjecte nul, inversió de subjecte i absència d'efectes that-t), i també del moviment de verb en infinitius en les llengües de subjecte nul, que és més llarg que en les llengües sense subjecte nul. La teoria també deriva la Generalització de Burzio, reduint-la a un requeriment estructural que no fa referència directa a la teoria temàtica (és a dir, a la presència o absència del paper temàtic extern).

The aim of this paper is to explore an alternative approach to the standard GB theory on the nature of AGR and sentence subjects. It accounts for the classical cluster of pro-árop properties (null subjects, subject inversion and absence of that-t effects) and also for verb movement in infinitives in pro-drop languages, which is longer than in non pro-drop ones. The present theory also derives Burzio's Generalization, by reducing it to a structural requirement without making direct reference to theta-theory (i.e., the presence or absence of the external theta-role).
