Encrucijadas de los modernismos anglosajón e hispanoamericano sobre traducción y tradición en la poesía de W. B. Yeats

Abstract

Estas notas examinan someramente la poética de W. B. Yeats con el fin de ofrecer una reflexión general sobre una de las paradojas que definen la traducción: la necesidad de reproducir un texto original. Según Yeats, la poesía se mantiene viva en la medida en que logra traer al presente la lengua propia de una comunidad formada por generaciones de poetas y cantantes tradicionales. Una traducción fiel a esta poética se encuentra ante la paradoja de tener que representar voces ausentes de forma que suenen presentes. Esta paradoja es constitutiva de la literatura de la modernidad en Europa y, especialmente, en Latinoamérica, donde, según Octavio Paz, «la lejanía geográfica y la histórica, el exotismo y el arcaísmo, tocados por la actualidad, se funden en un presente instantáneo». La traducción cultural de lo supuestamente propio y de lo supuestamente impropio que define la tradición poética latinomericana inaugurada por Rubén Darío constituye por tanto un punto de partida oportuno para plantear la traducción al español de la poesía de Yeats.

These notes briefly consider the poetics of W. B. Yeats with a view to offering a general reflection on one of the paradoxes defining translation: the need to reproduce an original text. According to Yeats, poetry lives only to the extent that it succeeds in bringing into the present the language of a community that has been forged by generations of poets and traditional bards. A translation that is faithful to this theory of poetry confronts the paradox of having to represent absent voices in such a way that they chime with the present. This paradox is crucial to modern literature in Europe and, particularly, in Latin America, where according to Octavio Paz, "geographical and historical distance, exoticism and archaism, coupled with the present day, fuse together in an instantaneous present." The cultural translation of the supposedly intrinsic and the supposedly "other", which defines the poetic tradition of Latin America begun by Rubén Darío, therefore constitutes an appropriate starting point from which to discuss the translation of W. B. Yeats's poetry into Spanish.
