La Capilla de los Arzobispos, el Tesoro y la Torre de don Gómez Manrique en la Catedral de Santiago de Compostela

Abstract

En 1250, el arzobispo compostelano don Juan Arias (1238-1266) fundó una capilla en el claustro de su catedral, a la memoria de los Archiepiscopum et anonicorum et aliorum fidelium efunctorum. Este espacio, que identifico con la sala capitular catedralicia, concluyó dedicándose a ámbito de enterramiento de los arzobispos de la sede apostólica, tal y como delatan las noticias sobre aniversarios, recibiendo sobre el mismo la construcción del tesoro catedralicio, lugar efectivo para las reuniones capitulares. Posteriormente, los problemas entre el arzobispo y los poderes civiles de la ciudad, determinaron la construcción de un espacio fortificado también en el claustro, que se destinó a tesoro nuevo y librería del cabildo, pasando a celebrarse aquí las reuniones del cabildo, hasta el siglo XVI, en que el nuevo claustro renacentista asumió varias de estas funciones, incorporando algunos de sus elementos a su fábrica.

In 1250, Archbishop Juan Arias (1238-1266) instituted a chapel in the cathedral cloister; consecrated to the memory of the Archiepiscopum et canonicorum et aliorum fidelium defunctorum. This space, identified with the cathedral chapter room, was the burial place of the Archbishops of the Apostolic See, just as the documented evidences of funeral worship prove. In a second story over the chapel was the Cathedral Treasury, real place of the chapter meetings. During the 14th century, the problems between the Compostela's Religious authority and the Town Council brought about the construction of a fortified building in the Cloister, it was destined to install the new Cathedral Treasury and the chapter library as well as a new place for the chapter meetings, of which architectural remains are preserved under the 16th Century cathedral cloister bays.
