Abstract

Durante las décadas de 1980 y 1990 el trabajo de campo en China realizado por antropólogos extranjeros estuvo sometido a un estricto control, acentuado tras la crisis de Tian'anmen (1989). El artículo aborda en primer lugar la posición del intelectual en China como contexto para entender las peculiaridades del proceso de investigación. A continuación se describe los primeros contactos e impresiones del mundo chino y las idas y venidas durante tres años de residencia, el proceso personal de inmersión en una sociedad y cultura ajenas donde el investigador es investigado. Para finalizar con una reflexión sobre el quehacer antropológico, las rupturas, sospechas y secuelas y el etnocentrismo que siempre nos acecha junto a posibles estrategias, caminos o alternativas para descentrar el sujeto de conocimiento monolítico occidental

The already tight control experienced by foreign anthropologists doing research in China during the 80s and 90s increased after the Tian'anmen crisis in 1989. The starting point of this article is an analysis of the position of intellectuals in China as a context for understanding the peculiarities of the research process. This is followed by a description of the author's first contacts with and early impressions of the Chinese world, comings and goings during three years of residence in China, and the personal process of immersion in an alien society and culture where the researcher is an object of investigation. The article concludes with a reflection on anthropological work: mistrust, suspicion and their consequences, and the ethnocentrism that invariably stalks us, as well as possible strategies, pathways and alternatives for de-centering monolithic Western knowledge
