Uno de los problemas a los que se enfrentaron las misiones a China desde su llegada fue la aparente incompatibilidad entre determinados preceptos confucianos y el mensaje cristiano. En lo que respecta a la traducción del Nuevo Testamento, algunos de los pasajes más susceptibles de herir las susceptibilidades locales son Jn 2,4 y Jn 19,26, en los que Jesús se dirige a María como "mujer" en vez de "madre". En el presente estudio analizamos las soluciones que se han dado a esta cuestión en un amplio corpus de traducciones de la Biblia al chino realizadas por católicos, protestantes y ortodoxos.

One of the issues missionaries encountered upon their arrival in China was the apparent incompatibility between certain Confucian precepts and the Christian message. With regards to translations of the New Testament, Jn 2:4 and Jn 19:26 stand out as two of the passages most likely to upset local sensibilities due to the fact that Jesus addresses Mary as "woman" as opposed to "mother". In this paper I will discuss the solutions that have been proposed to overcome this issue by analyzing a large corpus of Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox translations.
