Abstract

The city of Baku has experienced significant modifications and destruction to its urban fabric over the years, particularly during the Soviet era, resulting in damage to architectural and cultural heritage. This research by design focuses on the proposal of a pedestrian boulevard in Baku, with a series of social condensers built within exact footprints of "oblivions". The aim is to encourage socio-cultural engagement and strengthen identity through the social re-appropriation of these ignored urban traces. The proposal seeks to raise awareness about the city's cultural and urban heritage and promote controlled expansion - appropriate building height, materials, and spatial quality by incorporating educational institutions and social condensers that blend harmoniously with the surrounding environment. The concept revolves around the use of traditional carpet patterns as pavement - carpetscape, linking the social condensers and creating a sense of belonging and attachment to public spaces. The first social condenser, a trade and training center, is designed to revive the spirit of the former Alexander Nevsky Cathedral site, once a vibrant multicultural hub for trade routes. The complex acts as a hub for community interaction, cultural exchange, and learning about carpets and their historical significance. The second one transforms the former stock market area into a library and amphitheater, evoking the past functions. The third social condenser is located in the former Sovietski residential district, which was gentrified and transformed into a park, leaving a vacant area adjacent to Old Baku. Third social condenser - community center, reflects the dense and interconnected lifestyle of the former residents, incorporating functions such as an urban gallery, auditorium and co-working spaces, a kindergarten, and a retirement center.
