Abstract

In an era where Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are revolutionising industries through their diverse applications, offering innovative solutions, the criticality of their safe assimilation into existing airspace has emerged as a forefront concern. This transformation underscores the unprecedented need for rigorous design verification and adherence to regulations, given the inherent level of risk that these systems entail. This thesis proposes a detailed and comprehensive compliance strategy for the design verification of Special Condition Light UAS (SC Light UAS), with a focus on thoroughly understanding and adhering to relevant European regulations, particularly within the Specific operational category. By meticulously analysing the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) framework and incorporating its guidelines into the design and operational planning of SC Light UAS, this study sets the groundwork for a novel methodology that ensures UAS designs and operations meet regulatory standards. At the core of this research is the development of a compliance strategy for SC Light UAS design verification projects. This approach provides a systematic and effective method for demonstrating regulatory compliance, addressing the safety objectives set forth by regulatory authorities. The strategy not only serves to confirm the safety and regulatory adherence of UAS designs but also provides a clear step-by-step guide for manufacturers and operators to understand and navigate the regulatory landscape, ensuring their UAS comply with the rigorous requirements necessary for integration into safe airspace. Through this research, the thesis aims to contribute significantly to the ongoing discourse on UAS integration, offering practical solutions and strategic insights that could facilitate smoother and safer incorporation of unmanned systems into the global airspace infrastructure
