Abstract

The thesis “Spaces of Imagination - A Participatory Design Toolkit for Learning Spaces in the Philippines” investigates how participatory architecture can transform elementary school environments in the Philippines. It argues that involving children, educators and communities in the design process leads to more inclusive, resilient and culturally grounded learning spaces. Through fieldwork, participatory workshops and critical observations at three elementary school sites, the findings reveal systemic challenges—like school overcrowding, climate vulnerabilities and a lack of inclusive practices, while uncovering children’s visions of a playful, safe and meaningful environment. Ultimately, the final product is a Participatory School Design Toolkit for the Philippine context: a conceptual and practical tool for architects, educators and policy makers for co-creating learning environments that foster development, identity and belonging.
