Traducción de títulos de producciones cinematográficas en España y Polonia

The translation of the film titles causes a lot of controversy among spectators and the proposals of titles are often harshly criticized. Translating the titles of films is a great challenge due to the various problems they pose. The main aim of this essay is to carry out a comparative study of the translation of film titles into Spanish (for Spain) and into Polish, and to understand the reasons behind translation decisions. The complementary objectives are: to establish the strategies used in Spain and in Poland when translating film titles; to analyze the linguistic factors that may hinder translation and the extra-linguistic elements to be taken into account when translating a film title. The study is divided into two parts, the first one explains essential terms for understanding the translation process of film titles. Subsequently, the results of the study on the translation techniques used in both countries are discussed. To carry out the study, I have analysed 100 films premiered since 2000 and whose titles are in English. The results of the study show that in Poland the most common strategies are creation, literal and quasi-literal translation, while in Spain the transcription technique predominates. Having completed the study, it has been concluded that there are many factors that can affect the translation of the titles and that each of the decisions has its reason.

La traducción de los títulos fílmicos causa mucha polémica entre los espectadores y, a menudo, las propuestas de títulos son muy criticadas. Traducir los títulos de las obras cinematográficas es un gran reto debido a diversos problemas que presentan. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es llevar a cabo un estudio comparativo sobre la traducción de títulos de películas (en lengua inglesa) al español peninsular y al polaco, y entender el porqué de las decisiones de traducción. Los objetivos complementarios del siguiente trabajo son: establecer las estrategias utilizadas en España y Polonia a la hora de traducir los títulos de obras cinematográficas; analizar los factores lingüísticos que dificultan la traducción y los elementos extralingüísticos a tener en cuenta a la hora de traducir un título fílmico. El estudio está dividido en dos partes. Primero se explican los términos imprescindibles para la comprensión del proceso de traducción de los títulos fílmicos. Posteriormente, se analizan los resultados del estudio sobre las técnicas de traducción usadas en ambos países. Para realizar el estudio se han analizado cien películas estrenadas a partir del año 2000, cuyos títulos están en inglés. Los resultados del dicho estudio muestran que en Polonia se opta más por la creación, la traducción literal y cuasi-literal mientras que en España predomina la técnica de la transcripción. Después de haber elaborado el trabajo se ha llegado a la conclusión de que hay muchos factores que pueden afectar la traducción de los títulos y que cada una de las decisiones tiene su explicación.
