[EN] The Philogelos, written in Greek around the 4th century AD, is the only surviving collection of jokes dating probably from the Augustean era. Almost 40% of the jokes it contains involve a scholastikos. |

[en] This paper focuses on this character, and his role in the jokes: as a university student, an absent‐minded professor or an unpractical lawyer. A comparison of different modern translations of the Philogelos shows the difficulty of finding a suitable form for scholastikos without losing the humour in the jokes, since modern languages usually stress either the professional meaning of the word or the stupidity of the character. |
