El Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Barcelona custodia unas colecciones de paleobotánica que pueden considerarse, desde varios puntos de vista, de referencia internacional. Son tres las colecciones que principalmente se pueden destacar por su alto valor patrimonial, a saber, la de flora del Carbonífero de la cuenca Surroca-Ogassa (Girona), la del Cretácico Superior del Pirineo (Lleida) y la colección de flora del Mioceno de La Cerdaña (Lleida). La relevancia científica y cultural que hoy en día se puede otorgar a estas colecciones proviene, en gran medida, de las revisiones y estudios desarrollados tanto por investigadores del propio museo como por parte de investigadores externos. Todas las revisiones han servido para actualizar los datos taxonómicos de los especímenes y entender mejor la historia museológica de la colección. Además, los resultados de las investigaciones han aportado luz al conocimiento de la diversidad de la macroflora en anteriores periodos geológicos. Todo ello hace que las revisiones de las colecciones que albergan los centros museísticos sean claves para revalorizar tanto el mismo patrimonio geológico como el centro responsable de custodiarlo.

The Natural History Museum of Barcelona keeps palaeobotanical collections that can be considered an international reference from several points of view. The three main collections are, namely, the Carboniferous plants from the Surroca-Ogassa basin (Girona province), the Upper Cretaceous plants from the surroundings of the Pyrenean Basin (outcrops located in Lleida province) and the Miocene plants from the La Cerdanya basin (Lleida and Girona provinces); all them in Catalonia, NE Spain. The current scientific and cultural relevance is the result, to a large extent, of the studies developed by both the professionals in charge of the palaeontological collections and external researchers. All the revisions have allowed updating taxonomical data and better understanding the history of the museum collection. Moreover, revisions have increased our knowledge on macroflora diversity in former geological times. Thus, revising collections is the key factor for a value increase of both the geological heritage and the museums in charge of their preservation.
