In this paper, a case study in 2nd of BUP (10th grade) is discussed. Students are asked to solve an open-ended practical activity in physics which involves the planning of an experimental design and taking a number of decisions in the process. The analysis of transcriptions in two small groups shows some of the difficulties which they experience, as well as their understanding of the roles assigned in the classroom.
