El periple pictòric d'un pintor milanès a Catalunya : Joan Baptista Toscano, actiu entre 1599 i 1617

Abstract

L'estudi reconstrueix les dues dècades d'activitat del pintor italià Joan Baptista Toscano a Catalunya (entre 1595 i 1617), analitzant-ne el rastre documental, relativament abundant i ara enriquit de manera molt rellevant, i, sobretot, la seva obra conservada a la catedral de Girona (retaule de Tots Sants), l'església parroquial de Sant Andreu de Llavaneres (retaules major i del Roser), el MNAC (pintures d'un retaule de Sant Jaume), el Museu de Mataró (una taula de la Visitació de la Verge) i el Museu Arxiu de Santa Maria de Mataró (un Sant Gabriel i una Verge Maria d'una Anunciació). La conclusió serà la caracterització del seu llenguatge com la versió més genuïna del tardomanierisme pictòric esdevinguda al Principat.

In this article, I follow the steps of the Italian painter Joan Baptista Toscano during his long stay in Catalonia (from 1595 to 1617) and analyse his relatively abundant archival trail, which has been substantially enriched through this research. Most importantly, I examine his paintings from this period housed in the Girona Cathedral (the All Saints altarpiece), the Parish Church of Sant Andreu de Llavaneres (the main altarpiece and the Virgin of the Rosary altarpiece), the National Museum of Catalonia (several paintings belonging to a St James altarpiece), the Museum of Mataró (a panel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary), and the Museum-Archive of Santa Maria of Mataró (two-panel painting of the Archangel Gabriel and an Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary). This article aims to characterize and identify Joan Baptista Toscano's pictorial language as the most genuine version of late Mannerism art in Catalonia.
