Abstract

As the electrical energy production model is evolving from the traditional large capacity electrical power plants into distributed energy resources (DERs) that form smart grids and smart microgrids, having the capability to simulate innovative DER energy management techniques can eventually lead to obtaining revolutionary solutions that establish the foundations of a more efficient production model. In this master thesis, a local small-scale grid with DERs is modeled and analyzed in simulation, highlighting its potentials and exploring energy management and sizing approaches. Specifically, an energy management system (EMS) is modeled in order to analyze the behavior of the DER system under different control criteria, considering both fast transients and longer dynamics.
