Abstract

This Final Degree Project focuses on the analysis of the use of war metaphors in three institutional speeches by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. Based on the theoretical framework of Cognitive Linguistics and, in particular, Lakoff and Johnson’s (2001) Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), it is shown that these speeches are mainly articulated around two conceptual metaphors: THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IS A WAR and SARS-COV-2 IS THE ENEMY. The study also examines how this warlike framework functions as a persuasive strategy aimed at legitimizing the measures adopted by the government and at fostering social cohesion in a context of crisis
