Las burlas del ascetismo en la biografía de los filósofos griegos antiguos: ¿un reaprovechamiento de materiales cómicos?

Abstract

Que los biógrafos antiguos, especialmente los peripatéticos, como Sátiro, Hermipo o Aristóxeno, extraían muchos de sus datos de la Comedia parece hoy una cuestión difícilmente discutible. Esta breve comunicación se centra en las frecuentes acusaciones con que las tradiciones biográficas hostiles atacan a algunos filósofos griegos antiguos, calificándolos de comilones, borrachos, ávidos de lujos y tacaños, para postular que en esas burlas del ascetismo filosófico puede rastrearse un reaprovechamiento de materiales cómicos, en ocasiones claramente demostrable. Para ello, se usan fundamentalmente las Vidas y doctrinas de los más ilustres filósofos de Diógenes Laercio, receptáculo singular de anécdotas, de origen muy diverso, sobre filósofos.

Few today would question the notion that the ancient Greek biographies, particularly the Peripatetic ones, such as those of Satyrus, Hermippus and Aristoxenus, drew heavily on Comedy. This brief article focuses on the frequent barbs levelled at a particular group of ancient Greek philosophers by hostile biographical traditions, which labelled them gluttons, drunkards, lechers and misers. In order to conjecture that this ridicule of philosophical asceticism betrays the influence –and, indeed, on occasion represents a blatant reworking– of material from Comedy, I argue my case chiefly through an exploration of Diogenes Laertius’ Lives of Eminent Philosophers, a singular repository of anecdotes about the philosophers drawn from a variety of sources.
