L’espace périurbain de Marseille

Abstract

La ville antique de Marseille ayant connu une expansion continue entre sa fondation vers 600 av. J.-C. et l’époque romaine, les espaces périurbains ont été continuellement inclus dans les extensions de l’espace urbain, ce qui rend leur analyse délicate. Des secteurs artisanaux (fours de potiers, fours à amphores, carrières d’argile) semblent s’être situés le plus souvent aux marges de l’habitat, au pied des murailles. Les nécropoles, encore très mal connues pour la période grecque, semblent d’abord assez loin de la ville, tandis que les nécropoles hellénistiques et romaines occupent davantage l’espace périurbain. Enfin, le secteur de la Bourse constitue sous l’Empire une zone portuaire périurbaine, qui donnera naissance, à la fin de l’Antiquité, à un faubourg artisanal, puis à un quartier de la ville médiévale.

The early town of Marseille underwent continuous expansion from its foundation in around 600 BC to the Roman period; the periurban areas were continually being absorbed into the urban area, making their analysis difficult. Artisanal sectors (potters’ kilns, amphora kilns, clay quarries) more often than not appear to have been located on the edges of the habitat, at the foot of the walls. The necropolises, which are still poorly known for the Greek period, at first seem to have been quite far from the town, whereas the Hellenistic and Roman burial sites occupied the periurban area. Finally, under the Roman empire the area of the Bourse (Stock Exchange) was a periurban port zone, which gave rise at the end of antiquity to an extramural artisanal area and then to a quarter of the mediaeval town.
