Le foyer est souvent considéré comme l’élément principal permettant de définir l’espace domestique, au point où, dans plusieurs langues, le foyer et la maison sont désignés par un même mot. Le foyer est indispensable pour des activités quotidiennes comme la cuisine mais il sert également à l’éclairage ou au chauffage des pièces d’habitation, parmi d’autres fonctions. Durant l’Âge du fer, on peut distinguer une certaine variabilité du point de vue des formes, dimensions, emplacements et techniques de construction de ces structures. Cette diversité a probablement un rapport avec les fonctions qui y sont associées ainsi qu’avec des aspects symboliques ou cultuels. Le foyer est présent non seulement dans des espaces à fonction domestique mais aussi dans des pièces de travail, des salles de réunion et des espaces à vocation cultuelle, même si la rareté des temples et l’absence d’une architecture religieuse caractéristique rend difficile l’identification des lieux de culte. Dans cet article nous présentons une synthèse des différents types de foyers, de leurs fonctions et significations possibles durant le premier Âge du fer et la période ibérique.

Hearths are often considered a key element in defining domestic space, to the extent that, in several languages, hearth and home are referred to by the same word. The hearth is essential for daily activities such as cooking, but it is also used for lighting or heating rooms, among other functions. During the Iron Age, some variability can be distinguished in terms of the shape, dimensions, location, and construction techniques of hearths. This diversity is probably related to associated functions as well as to symbolic or cultural aspects. The hearth is located not only in spaces of domestic use but also in workshops, meeting rooms and areas of worship, although the rarity of temples and the absence of typical religious architecture make it difficult to identify the latter. In this paper, we present a synthesis of different types of hearths, their functions and possible meanings during the Early Iron Age and the Iberian period.
