The archaeological research of medieval sites in Catalonia has been increased in the last years. This article presents the origin and evolutioin of some for- tified places in the frontier between muslim Spain and Catalonia during 10th and 11th centuries. Most of these villages, in high places, became deserted between 12th and 13th centuries because of the changes in the frontier lands. People moved into low lands gradually, around new villages, or even re-inhabitetj dispersed farms (masies) that have remained to our days.
